A prolific cult has attached itself to veganism like a giant sucking leech, condemning ethical veganism and promoting an anorexic/orthorexic, fanatically low-fat diet based on starch, or entirely fruit, raw, whatever. The word “fat” is spit out with utter contempt, so to be a member of this cult you need to get proficient at that, their main identifier.
In this highly tolerant cult, liberal politics are openly preached as if “no conservatives need apply.” Virtuous, extreme thinness and wide thigh gaps abound, exercise mania rules the day, bubbliness beams from gaunt little faces, toothpick arms flail, and aggressive normalcy oozes from loudly babbling mouths. They sometimes live in fancy big houses and brag about how admirable and wonderfully normal their lives, their selves and their perfect families are.
They pity or make fun of anyone lacking their advantages. They especially pity-hate the “overweight” and assume that those people consume shameful quantities of vegetable & animal fats, otherwise they would not be fatties. Yet, being judgmental is a huge taboo in this jet-setter community…so by “judgmental” they mean judging anything differently than they do.
I often see them gossiping, gleefully condemning even slightly chubby people, political opposites and animal-advocate vegans as scourges and destructive morons. That, they claim, is their being appealing and welcoming to not-yet-vegans. Along with, of course, their embracing of meat eating and such as just another life choice, nothing morally wrong with it…nothing at all! (Except that it’s “fattening.”)
If you’re fawning and apologetic enough to the wiry plant-based for your slovenly, less than reedy self, and properly admiring, you too can join their big happy club. Because vegan no longer has a definition, you see, it’s a big, happy, selectively indefinable group of slim party people who only reject fatties, those obsessed with animal suffering, and the politically incorrect (ew, outcasts!). For other than those undesirable groups, vegan now means a carelessly shrugged, “whatever.” 😃
That pragmatism brings SUCCESS! to these self-proclaimed effective vegans…they get the numbers that way, they say, while preachy, bad vegans FAIL by scaring folks away by insisting that vegan means, well, vegan, as in radical, as in no animal foods, products, etc. …nothing that supports animal use/abuse/killing, to the best of our abilities in the world as it is. But we’re wrong, you see, vegan is strictly a diet, mainly a weight loss diet, and when you’re done losing weight, or whatever, you can go back to animal products if they call out to you…and still be vegan if you wanna be! You don’t have to be honest and true like them…

I speak as a former lapsed vegan who wanted to continue calling myself vegan when I wasn’t, but would say “mostly vegan” if asked. I was sporadically over the years eating dairy, eggs and occasional fish just because it was “easier” and I was isolated away from other vegans, more able to fool myself into believing the cage-free or humane myths. I was also frightened by clever “vegan health disaster” stories put out by meat industry shills. Realizing that honesty and true definitions really matter (and the animals even more so)…thanks to “preachy” online vegans no less…are what brought me back to stay in early 2009. This is precisely the problem “pragmatic vegans” have with ethical vegans, why they hate us so much. They don’t want vegans to stay with it. They evidently have another agenda?
We animal-advocates have non-vegan loved ones and love them no less, but would love them even more than ever if they got with us. We’re basically decent people, not these venomous monsters we’re depicted as (by actual venomous people). We don’t go around tying people to railroad tracks or whatever “vegan villains” do. We understand “almost vegan” and such; we appreciate when people are trying and transitioning, and less animal consumption is always better. Still, we do want everyone to be with us…but as vegans for the animals, not KFCegans or unconcerned plant-based dieters. (I have a lot of gall assuming that I speak for other vegans, but it’s just going by my experiences.)
Now with this pragmatic anti-vegan vegan cult, being vegan “to the best of our abilities” has been contorted to mean that if eating big macs on occasion is the best you can do, then you’re still vegan if you only eat big macs a couple of times a month, or whatever, that’s just a random example. Now, that sounds like a meat industry agenda to me.
See, to be a proper, effective vegan activist you need to preach about dangers and pitfalls of “giving up a whole, vital category of food!” and how most people cannot do this safely, so they need to be forgiven when they go back to cheeseburgers and bacon & eggs (the real goal). Ideally, grass fed, free range, humanely killed! But ideals aren’t fun all the time, so off to Bill’s Burger Barn you go…you gotta live after all, shucks. Now, this is how you grow veganism!
Well, that is of course how you water down veganism, attempt to make it meaningless, frightening, cultish, bizarre, dangerous, and full of loopholes, where animal farming & slaughter suddenly are under its welcoming umbrella. That’s in fact how you fight against veganism from within. Like a disease. Then we have their favorite Pied Piper, Temple Grandin, at the helm with all that “humane” slaughter gushiness people so love to get behind. It’s a hell of a lot of cleverness…I’ll give it that.
But wait, there’s a “vaccine” against the disease, this “too hip & healthy to dwell on animal abuse” and/or this “effective pragmatic” plant-based dieting: Love for innocent life, self-respect, moral/ethical strength, honesty, and a highly developed deception filter. And there are no debilitating side effects with this self-immunization. To top it all off, it’s free! Rewarding even.
